Awoshie-Pokuase Highway; dangerous to cross at night

Road users especially pedestrians who use the Awoshie-Pokuase Highway, in the Greater Accra Region, are in a constant battle of hide-and-seek with death in using the stretch at night as there is no functioning streetlight from Barn Yard through to Ablekuma.

The highway has for over the years recorded gory accidents. Residents of Awoshie in August 2020 protested the incessant killings on the road by speeding vehicles. This led authorities to fix one of the nonfunctioning traffic lights without attending to the nonfunctioning streetlights.

Aniwaba’s roving reporter observed Thursday night, November 18 2021, how pedestrians struggled to cross the highway. It was also observed how trotro (public transport) drivers carelessly packed on the shoulders of the road further deepening pedestrians’ woes of poor visibility of incoming vehicles.

The Awoshie-Pokuase Highway is also dotted with fallen streetlight poles on the median. Authorities concerned in fixing both streetlights and traffic lights are advised to immediately ensure the situation is rectified before more deaths are recorded on the road again.
