B/R: Police officer stabbed to death, suspect killed

A police officer has been stabbed to death in the Bono Region, the Ghana Police Service has announced on Facebook Sunday, January 16.

The suspect was also shot and killed in the process.

“The Police Administration, with a heavy heart, wishes to announce that a Police officer has been stabbed to death and in the process the violent suspect was also shot and killed,” the police statement said.

According to the police, the deceased officer Sergeant Bright Annobil, popularly known as BB, had gone to arrest the suspect (also deceased) after threats of complaint was lodged at the Nyamebekyere Police station, Berekum, by one Yaw Amankona.

The suspect was arrested and upon reaching the Nyamebekyere Police station he stabbed Sergeant Bright Annobil on the neck, with a hidden knife on him. The injured officer was rushed to the Berekum Holy Family Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

“A manhunt was launched in the Berekum township to track down the suspect and when he was found at his hideout at Komfuokrom, a suburb of Berekum, he again attacked and attempted to stab the arresting officers with the knife. He was shot after several attempts to disarm him failed. He was also sent to the Holy family Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival,” a police statement by Inspector Isaac Okyere read.
